Royal Proclamation – 6th May 204

On Monday 6th May, Carlton Avison – Potton’s Town Crier – joined hundreds of town criers from the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man to proclaim the first anniversary of the Coronation of King Charles the Third and Queen Camilla.

At 12 noon, Carlton read out The Royal Proclamation on the Market Square which had been specially written for the occasion and agreed with Buckingham Palace.

Carlton, who is a business owner, retained fire fighter and first responder, and lives in Potton, was delighted and honoured to be representing Potton to make this historic proclamation.

From Medieval times, the town crier has been a primary means of news communication with townsfolk – from Royal proclamations, local bylaws, market days, to adverts and important information.
